Waste Management Inc. of Florida unsuccessfully tried Tuesday to get County Commission permission to stop collecting recyclables in unincorporated Brevard for up to a month as a potential “measure of last resort” to solve the driver shortage it is experiencing because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Dina Reider-Hicks, Waste Management’s public affairs manager, who represented the company at Tuesday’s County Commission meeting, said the recent spike COVID-19 cases is “significantly impacting our workforce here in Florida.”
