Palm Bay Police Chief Nelson Moya said the chase began after reports of an armed robbery in northeast Palm Bay around 9 a.m. The suspect, identified by police as Elias Grant, 19, was spotted by Melbourne police officers. At that point, the chase began, as Grant led officers from West Melbourne to Palm Bay.
When Grant crashed into the trees, he fled from the scene on foot. An unidentified woman who was in the car during the chase also was taken into custody.
Grant was hiding in the woods under the scrub brush when officers flushed him out by announcing K-9s would be coming in looking for him, according to Lt. Mike Smith with Palm Bay Police Department. He was arrested, and the investigation is continuing. Grant was out on bond after being arrested earlier this year on a separate armed robbery charge.
Moya praised the multi-agency effort between Palm Bay, Melbourne, West Melbourne and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in making the arrest.
“This is yet another case of a felon trying to escape justice. In this case, with the help of very excellent collaborative police work, he was taken into custody.”
